Sector Skills Assessment for Wales 2011
Creative Skillset has conducted a comprehensive UK–wide analysis of demand for skills in the Creative Media Industries and Fashion and Textiles sectors and produced a suite of Sector Skills Assessments (SSAs), which include assessments for each UK nation.
You can download the SSAs for the Creative Media and Fashion and Textiles industries in Wales on this page. To summarise their findings:
Creative Media
Creative Media is a key ingredient of Wales's Knowledge Economy and at the heart of both the Government's and Welsh Assembly's plans for economic growth. It is affected by a range of global drivers, including the fast moving pace of technology and the appetite for new platforms on which to consume media content.
The increasing levels of TV drama production (including the new BBC Drama Village in Roath Basin) over recent years needs to be built upon. This will provide a platform on which to build and explore further commercial opportunities and entry to new markets. Key to realising these opportunities will be the need to ensure that Wales has a Creative Media workforce fully equipped with the skills to take maximum advantage.
Education, learning and development in Wales needs to take into consideration specific workforce characteristics. These include: a relatively young workforce; an under–representation of women and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic members of the workforce (BAMEs); a highly qualified workforce and a strong reliance on freelance and cross sector workers.

Fashion and Textiles
Fashion and textiles in Wales accounts for almost 3,000 firms employing just under 10,000 people. Employment is centred around the manufacture of textiles which employs 38% of the workforce.
Excluding the self–employed workforce, gross value added (GVA) for the sector in Wales is estimated at just under £150 million, with GVA per head measured averaging over £29,000.
Despite this continued decline in the gross number employed, the sector will experience positive net recruitment requirements. This is due to the large number of people forecast to leave the sector through retirement and the need to fill these emerging vacancies. In all, taking 2007 figures as a base, well over a third of the workforce will require replacement by 2017.
